KNOCKANURE is getting ready for major celebrations on Friday night as the village marks the 50th anniversary of the construction of its church - considered at the time one of the most architecturally innovative buildings in the country. Corpus Christi Church in Knockanure was designed by Michael Scott - the man behind Busáras and The Abbey Theatre - who is still revered as the most important Irish architect of the 20th Century.

Love them or loath them, each of his buildings were seen as major architectural works and Corpus Christi in Knockanure was no different attracting major interest nationally on its erection in 1964.

"I still remember it being built. I was a teenager at the time and there was great excitement in the parish throughout the construction. It is still regarded as one of the most important churches for that period in the entire country," sacristan and Parish Pastoral Council chairperson Margaret Carmody said.

Story

We sold 105 Papers yesterday down in the LOOP. I had rested my GREEN

bag with the papers in it against the light pole and My Friend Terence came

up and told me that the BAG reminded him of the time back in Ireland. He

said that he had went to the PUCK FAIR at Killorglin all the way from

Moyvane a small place near KNOCKANURE. Well he said I met up with my

old Friend Kitty O'Connor (You should hear her sing "BIDDY DONAHUE")

She hails from Abbeyfeale, I cannot figure it out, Kitty must be a mind reader

because I said to her that day, 'KITTY I have a bag of kittens here and if you

can guess how many, I will give the both of them to you.' SHE DID.

MEALS: A price-savvy Cork mum has shared how she cooks meals on a budget amidst the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.

Anne Marie Dollard says she's saved thousands of euros on groceries since learning how to cook on a strict budget and to get the most out of each of her meals. From small things like changing her shopping habits to growing some of her own produce, Anne Marie has managed to feed herself and her loved ones from as little as 85c per portion.

Slowly building up a well-stocked pantry, investing in a larger freezer to get the most out of leftovers, avoiding big brands and scouring the reduced sections have been key steps in Anne Marie's money-saving journey. The 45-year-old also started growing veg in her back garden and while it takes a little bit more effort than a quick trip to Tesco, the extra time spent has paid off handsomely for her.

FARMERS: ICOS has identified the following five main priority areas for immediate action:

Suspension of on-farm inspections: ICOS has called for a one-month suspension of all Bord Bia and Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) on-farm inspections.

This recommendation aims to alleviate current stress and workload on farms and to ensure continued compliance with standards without additional pressure on farmers.

Rebate on feed: A government-matched rebate on feed, mirroring the support already provided by co-operatives, should be implemented, according to ICOS.

The organisation has said that this would ease the financial burden on farmers by reducing the cost of essential supplements needed to bridge the nutritional gap caused by currently inadequate grazing.

DIVINE MERCY: You probably already know about the devotion to Divine Mercy in the Catholic Church.

Divine Mercy images can be seen in churches around the world, the Chaplet of Divine Mercy is very popular, and Divine Mercy Sunday is an official feast day of the Church. The founder of the devotion, Saint Faustina Kowalska, is even honored as a saint.

But it wasn’t always this way. In fact, the whole devotion was suppressed for many years and almost lost for good. It only came back due to prayer, perseverance, and the hand of Divine Providence. This is the amazing story.

80 YEARS: Mercier Press, the oldest independent publisher in Ireland, celebrates 80 years in business this year-----------

When he set up Mercier, Seán Feehan was a captain in the Irish Army, stationed at Collins Barracks in Cork. To call him the driving force behind the business would be something of an understatement. He was a man of unusual vision for his time, something which can be seen in an RTÉ archive clip from an interview he did with Breandán Ó hEithir for the television programme Féach in January, 1971.

Easter Message from Bishop Ray: Christ is Risen and present to us all.

Holy Week and Easter are close to the hearts of many people in all our parishes, thank God. Lovely to see large numbers who come to the Cathedral on Good Friday and Holy Saturday to quietly do “The Stations of the Cross”. For many the Cross of Jesus gives them the strength to endure the Cross in their own lives. Some parishes have a well-attended dawn Mass on Easter Sunday morning. Witnessing the light of dawn on Easter Sunday morning symbolizes the Resurrection as the moment of proclamation of Jesus Christ as the “Light of the World”. May Good Friday remind us of Christ’s gift to us all of his victory over death, - eternal life. May Easter Sunday morning remind us that Christ is risen, Christ is alive, and He is present in our lives through the Holy Spirit. The mystery of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Creator and Lord of us all. This Holy Week we remember the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and we worship him as our Savior and our Hope. Every Easter blessing on all the people of all our parishes, and on our loved ones wherever they are in the world this Easter. Every blessing too on all for whom this is their first Easter in Ireland.

Parish Gathering

In his Pastoral Letter, “Moving Forward in Hope”, Bishop Ray invites all parishioners to participate in a consultation process to shape the future of pastoral areas and parishes.  A consultation gathering will be held in our parish of Moyvane/Knockanure on Tuesday 5th March 2024 at 7.30pm in the Marian Hall, Moyvane.

As preparation for the gathering, you are invited to reflect on the following three questions:

1. Without the presence of a priest to lead and coordinate, what aspects of parish life could we, the laity, take responsibility for and organise ourselves?

2. Where do we see scope for cooperation with neighbouring parishes in our pastoral area?

3. Given what Bishop Ray has said about reducing numbers and increasing age, what do we want to say to priests?

Many thanks for your support and assistance for this consultation.

Other Notices:

KERRY DIOCESAN COLLECTION FOR – LOURDES HELPERS FUND WILL TAKE PLACE NEXT WEEKEND:

Over 50 years ago Kerry Diocese decided to go on pilgrimage to Lourdes to enable assisted (sick) pilgrims visit the shrine.  This year is the 50th pilgrimage with assisted pilgrims (due to the pandemic assisted pilgrims were unable to travel some years). This year is sort of a new beginning or restarting of the pilgrimage. The theme for this year in Lourdes is “come here in procession” which Our Lady asked St Bernadette. As we return, we need helpers, nurses, and the need to inform people (who need assistance) to join us in 2024. Daycare centres/nursing homes are invited to inform their service users who may wish to travel with us. The Pilgrimage has changed in many ways over the past 50 years, but the main purpose is still the same, to take the sick to Lourdes and for this we need helpers. Many are students and thus require help to finance the trip. This collection goes towards that effort. The Lourdes Helpers Fund also helps assisted pilgrims who may not be able to afford to pay the full fare and would like to go to Lourdes. The collection for the Lourdes Helpers will be taken up next weekend as a second collection after Holy Communion.

ST. BRIGID’S CROSSES The 6th Class of Scoil Réalta na Maidne (Boys School) to support their funds. The crosses which are blessed are on sale in the Parish Office.

Lord God,    we ask that you help us understand how to be a true friend to one another and to you.  We are all called to treat everyone we meet with love, respect and kindness. Let our lives be known for serving you through serving others. Help us to always remember your commandment to love one another. Amen        + Bishop Ray Browne

Organic farming is something else that feels green, but the picture becomes much more complicated when you dig into the details. “It’s not obvious that organic farming is better for the environment than ‘conventional’ farming,” Ritchie writes. Organic farms tend to be better for local biodiversity, but because they produce less food per acre they’re bad for land use. The EU has set itself the target of making 25 percent of its farmland organic by 2030, but this could reduce its production by between 7 and 12 percent, forcing more land to be converted to agriculture elsewhere in the world.

THE BIRTH OF JESUS CHRIST 25TH DEC.

Thank You – ‘Míle Buíochas’

As we celebrate Christmas and bring the year 2023 to a close, I feel that I’m very privileged and indeed it is my honour to continue working with you as your Parish Priest here in Listowel. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you sincerely for the support that you give to your Parish and to me personally throughout the year. It takes a lot of people to make a Parish active and to keep it going in these difficult and challenging times. It could not happen only that we are blessed with good staff, Parish Secretary Denise and both sacristans Helen and Martina and a lot of volunteers who are dedicated to our Parish. Many of you work behind the scenes and you might feel your work sometimes goes unnoticed, but each person in their own right play their part, and each does it so well. A special thanks to Fr. Martin, Fr. Jack, Fr. Brendan & Fr. Anthony of our Pastoral Area.

I thank the Parish Finance Council who keeps an eye on the Parish Finances. I thank the Parish Pastoral Council and the Safeguarding Committee for their support and guidance. Thanks to the Parish Liturgy Group who co-ordinate the various ministries and liturgies. The Eucharistic Ministers / Parish Youth Group /  the Readers, the Collectors, the Counting Teams who count the parish offerings, the Parish Choir, the Parish Folk Group, their members, their directors and musicians. We are blessed to have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament weekly in our Parish. Thank you all who make it possible. We have the Padre Pio Prayer Group & Legion of Mary who run their regular meetings - I’m not forgetting our Altar Servers, their parents and teachers for their support. You all do a great job, and your help is much appreciated.

To those who clean the church - not alone is this done for Christmas, but it is done quietly all year around. Those who donate flowers and look after both inside and outside the church and Presbytery grounds throughout the year. So many visitors remark on how well each place looks. This is a tribute to you, so take a bow. To those of you who put up the Crib and those who are available at moments notice  to do the various maintenance jobs of the Parish throughout the year.

We are dependent on each other for friendship, support, and finance. Thank you for your generosity and kindness to your Parish and to me personally right throughout the year. I pray that God will bless and reward you and your family with all his gifts this Christmas and throughout the new year of 2024.

   God Bless                                                                             Fr. Declan
